WordPress mail through SMTP (Google Apps)

Recommended Posts

First of all, I'm loving the experience hosting my website with MDDHosting. Site is fast and responsive. Thanks!

I manually transferred my WordPress site from a previous host to MDDHosting and placed it on an add-on domain. Had to set up MX entries again since I use Google Apps to handle e-mail, and disabled everything on the previous host afterward. Anyway, I was trying to get WordPress to send mail via SMTP instead of PHP mail, but I'm getting an error on test:

SMTP -> ERROR: Failed to connect to server: Connection timed out (110)

SMTP options are set to use the following values:

SMTP Host: smtp.google.com
SMTP Port: 465
Encryption: SSL
Authentication: Yes

On previous host I had to request port 465 be opened. Is this necessary on MDDHosting?

Oh, and as a side question: Do I need to keep my php.ini file that I transferred? I believe the PHP configuration in cPanel either overrides custom entries or flags are required in .htaccess. Not sure.

Thanks in advance for help.

Quick update:

I opened a ticket this morning explaining the problem and Michael from Support responded within seconds to say he had fixed the problem. He opened port 465 for me and now WordPress can send email via SMTP.

Thanks again Michael and all those at MDDHosting. Excellent service and customer support!
