Network Maintenance - June 17th, 18th - 12 AM to 2 AM ET - All Services Affected

Recommended Posts

We are scheduling some upcoming network maintenance to upgrade and expand our networking.

The scheduled maintenance windows are:

Thursday, June 17, 2021 from 12 AM to 2 AM Eastern Time.

Friday, June 18, 2021 from 12 AM to 2 AM Eastern Time.

Impact:

All services will be offline during the maintenance window on Thursday, June 17, 2021. To protect data integrity we will be shutting down all servers at the beginning of this maintenance window. We will restore services as quickly as possible and do not expect it to take the full 2 hours.

On Friday we will be moving one of our primary networking uplinks and re-routing that traffic through a new inter-connect. We do not at this time expect outages on Friday.

Updates:

We will be keeping this thread on our forums updated as the maintenance progresses.

Thank you for letting us know. Just curious, is this upgrade for increased capacity? redundancy?

Technically speaking it's both.

We bringing online a new cloud cluster in another part of the facility and we're cross-connecting them and splitting our uplinks and routing between them to ensure overall redundancy. We're gaining the new capacity in the new cluster but our transit is already 40 times larger than we use on average so we don't have to increase that now but we likely will in the future. There shouldn't be any disruptions when we do eventually do that.

In theory we could bring the new setup online without any modifications to our current infrastructure or outages but that would be at the cost of redundancy. Without making any changes losing one of our cloud clusters could take all other cloud clusters offline - this is not good. Rather than relying only on our current networking hardware in the current cloud cluster we are doubling it and putting half in the new cluster and half in the old cluster. This way if, for example, somehow one of our clusters were to go dark / lose networking / lose power / etc - everything else on our network will continue operating.

The network maintenance went smoothly and all services are back online as of around a few minutes before 2 AM. I spent the last 20 minutes or so checking every server manually in additional to all of our monitoring just to be sure.

As the servers were shut down prior to the network maintenance and brought back up after it was completed we are not expecting any issues at all.

Tomorrow's Maintenance

We are expecting no downtime although there may be a few moments of increased latency. This isn't to say downtime will absolutely not happen - that's why we've scheduled the maintenance window just in case. Tonight's maintenance went well enough that we were able to get far more done than expected which makes tomorrow night a much easier task.

One of the things I appreciate most about MDDHosting is your proactive upgrading. Your communication about what to expect, and when, was great - specific and succinct, with plenty of advance notice. And (sorry to even mention it, but hard to praise improvement without doing so), you have clearly learned from past mistakes. All of these are reasons I feel confident recommending MDDH to my clients.
