Higher Load on Zeus

I see that Zeus (the server that I'm on) constantly has higher loads than Atlas. My assumption was that fewer people are on this server being that it's semi-dedicated. Is this normal? Also, what is an optimal range for server loads?

Zeus tends to have "heavy" users on it which usually results in a higher overall load. We watch the servers carefully to ensure that they don't become slow and that HTTP, MySQL, Exim, FTP, and all other important server daemons continue to run smoothly and efficiently.

Generally with our hardware configuration a load of up to 12~16 is "acceptable" but we tend to prefer the load to stay under 4 with a maximum of around 6. Load can be caused by many different things from CPU usage, to Hard Drive I/O. We currently are maintaining nightly cPanel backups on the Zeus server which causes the loads at night to be higher than during the day for a couple of hours but there is no discernible difference in speed on the server overall.

We are working on a daily incremental backup system currently that we hope to have released within the next two months that should reduce overall server load and make available multiple versions of any file you have possibly several times a day for at least one or two weeks back.

I do apologize for the delay in a response to this thread as we've focused directly on our customer support through the holidays as we were a little short handed.

If you have any further questions feel free to respond to this thread, to contact me directly, or to ask the support department at support@mddhosting.com

Thank you!

R1Soft incremental backups are now running on all Semi-Dedicated servers as well. http://forums.mddhosting.com/index.php?showtopic=99
