[Completed] Fresco Server - Restoration Completed - File System Check Competed

Recommended Posts

Really appreciate all the work your going through with this.

I know how temperamental servers can be and I also know that some other (big named) hosts wouldn't be trying this hard to, or even be able to, recover user data.

So again thanks for all your efforts and fingers crossed that this time works eh.

Mike has been up since the server went down and has no plans on taking a break until its back up and running.

Really appreciate that.

But, I did'nt know it takes so much time to transfer 1/2 a TB data between two servers.

If it were as simple as just SCPing some data, then it wouldn't take so long. The way R1Soft CDP works is that it only backs up the changed data between each restoration point. For example we can back up a 470 GB server, with one full restoration point per day and keep each restoration point for 28 days while only using aroun 550~600 GB of total storage. The system also compresses all of this data to save space.

When we do a restoration to a point, it has to merge all of the necessary deltas (i.e. changed data points) into the actual file for that day, send it over to the server, and then the server itself decompresses the data. This all takes time - it's not as simple as just copying files directly.

Like Mike said it's not as easy as we all would like it to be. But it's something we have to do in order to bring the server back online. I know that Mike and everyone envolved would love for this not to have happened but it did. At least Mike is doing his very best to bring back online as soon as he can.

The way I look at it is it take 5 mins to fill up your gas tank but takes a full day of driving to empty it.

What happens to any email being sent to addresses hosted on these servers at the moment?

Do they get bounced back as undeliverable, or are they being stored somehow or what?

That's entirely up to the sending mail server - most servers will queue outgoing mail for up to 72 hours and attempt to deliver the email once per hour or so.

As someone who has experience with half a dozen hosts - I am happy in the knowledge that MDD continues to deliver the best service around - and when attacks like this happen (which they inevitably do) - they are promptly resolved.
Same here, we are lucky to have Mike onboard. Many hosts would have just ignore us, and our backups Edited by MikeDVB
Removed some extraneous spaces, didn't change the content itself :)

Very true. You only need to visit some of the admin forums around the net to find some horror stories of well known hosts not restoring data or recovering servers when things turn to custard.

It's a pleasure knowing MDD Hosting has your back when it matters.

The server restoration has approximately 1 hour remaining. Once it is completed there is a good chance we will need to conduct a file system check which may take 2 to 6 hours depending on the state of the file system after restoration. We will update this thread once the restoration is complete to let you know if a file system check was required or not.
