Heather
Hello all. I've been looking up hosting options and from what I've seen, MDDHosting is pretty good. I've been with my current host for over 6 years, and although it's generally decent as well, I've come to realize that its mail server is either flakey or doesn't like the Mail app. And when you're a new designer wanting to get work, it's bad if your "proper" address doesn't work right. How is the mail server with MDD Hosting? Does it use custom ports? Also, what is the general wait time if you have a support ticket? Does it work with software such as wordpress and simplemachines (more the former, I'm guessing it does but I know sometimes places have settings that can break certain things)? My main need is to host my illustration and design portfolio, which also has a blog. I also have another separate blog on a subdomain that I may or may not move over. Thanks! fshagan
I think Mail uses IMAP by default, and in some standard setups you can get a "temporary lockout" due to nearly continuous log ins to the mail server. My sister's iPhone was checking mail every 6 seconds. I have a VPS here, so my set up is probably different from the shared servers in this respect. I did have to tweak the settings from a standard cPanel set up and work with my clients to make sure they weren't flooding the server with requests. Mike will probably chime in with how the shared servers here work with it. One thing I can tell you is that if there is a fix, MDDHosting will fix it. The service and support response is very good here.
Heather
Thanks for the responses. I peeked at the settings in Mail and it checks every 5 minutes, which I wouldn't think is bad. And it never has problems refreshing for mail generally; most of the issue is in sending mail and having periods were it just refuses to work (my current host uses port 26 for some reason and when I was told to try 25, it didn't work at all). Jarkko
Hi Heather, I am running SMF in one of my sites and it works like a charm, no problems at all. Support tickets have been answered rapidly, I sometimes wonder if Mike and his staff ever sleep

Every five minutes seems fine to me too. The reason for using port 26 is to get by the block by some ISPs on port 25 for sending mail through a web server (the other alternate port I've seen is port 587). Michael D.
It looks like our clients already answered most of your questions. We run a fairly standard setup but if you do have any issues at all we are here to help you.
