Any One Got Attacked By The Spam Bot?

I did not get many but I know I saw posts all over the place where even hotmail got hit hard by spambots.

I used to get a lot of drama on my site now its just people having fun and having good conversations.

I installed the update, the new captcha backgrounds make things considerably more difficult, as well as the new fonts :)

I already had it set up to do random numbers instead of the first 6 characters of the reg_id... :)

I run vbulletin and notices a lot of people whinning about the bots today at the members forum but I didn't have a issue on any of my forums. I think because this coder from vbulletin.org came out with a pretty decent hack and it is a lot more impressive than anything I have ever seen before. Since I installed the hack a few months back I haven't had any issues other than trolls LMAO I have a few members like that.

I have not gotten any more then the few I got yesterday.

The IPB patch works fine.

What was wrong was IPB was using the first 6 characters of $reg_id for the captcha instead of generating random letters/numbers :) It was making it too easy to guess.

That and the font+background was easy for a bot to decipher.

Ya same here but I did just get one more bot that just posted a link to an adult site and I do not allow adult content.

Maybe someday these programmers will find more productive uses for their time.

I guess they do get decent money in referrals due to the affiliate programs.

Yep some one was saying on another site who clicks on those links.

:)

Honestly, you might be surprised. Apparently they get SOMETHING out of it, or they wouldn't go to the trouble.

It's like spam mail, you would say "Who clicks on those links?" but people do it, or nobody would bother sending spam.

I'm still confused how these bots can get by image verification or questions.

That still worries me.

Thankfully my board is so small and hard to find (not happy about that really) it seemed to have been ignored, or not on the list.

Most bots find your forums by search engines, at least they did last time I looked into it. That is unless somebody knows about your forums and hates you (not too likely, I wouldn't think).

Captcha is difficult but some of them are easy to figure out for programs. I've been a programmer for over 15 years and I have written code to figure out captcha just to see if I could do it but I've never released it to the public; if I could write it then I am sure somebody else could too.

Thanks mike I didn't understand it was that easy to crack.

What bugs me is this just makes it harder for real forum members to go about their business.

I've got a visual impairment and I hate using the image verification its definitely a vexing problem.

Like you said though mike, they wouldn't do this unless they made money of it some how.
