Transfer Questions

Hi,

I opened a ticket a couple days ago with some enquiries, but I haven't received any ticket info in my email. Perhaps I mistyped it. :D Some of my Questions have been answered by viewing the various threads and pages here at MDDHosting.com, so I will only ask the remaining ones below, plus a new one.

  1. Is my Website valid according to MDD's ToS?
I believe it is, but it's better to know now, rather than later. Website URL is in my profile. It's a fansite for an out-of-print board game with fan content and community forums etc.

  2. Section 7.a of the ToS states that a User may not exceed resources beyond 25% for more than 120 seconds. How does this affect FTP for those who like to make frequent backups, or need to make major updates? Also, is there a way to ensure limits aren't exceeded for PHP scripts via .htaccess?

  3. My average storage and bandwidth use is well within the limits of basic shared hosting. Only once in 4 years has my bandwidth exceeded the available range (1200GB in a single month over a year ago, think we were hit by a crazy bot, it was only from a single file being downloaded repeatedly). If an IP address is downloading from the Website, is there a way to limit the number of simultaneous downloads an IP can make at once, or in an hour?

I believe that's all I need to know as of now. I'm really impressed with MDD after thoroughly reviewing all the information here. Thank you for your time.

Here is the original response:

> Greetings,

Hello.

> A new Web Host is needed as service with my current host is up for renewal. The

> last year with them has been very disappointing. Sad given the great track

> record we shared during three prior years. But they were a subsidiary to a

> company that merged with Endurance International, thus stripped of any value.

I can understand that, they're a fairly large conglomerate that is more focused on making money than anything else.

> On to my Questions (looking at shared hosting):

> 1) Would my Website (redacted) fit your ToS given it's current content

> and be allowed at MDDHosting.com?

I don't see anything on the surface that would cause issues - if you haven't already you should review our Terms of Service at http://www.mddhosting.com/tos.php and if you have any questions or concerns about any specific provisions I'll be more than happy to address those questions.

> 2) In your ToS, section 7.a User may not use more than 25% of resources for

> longer then (should be 'than' by the way) 120 seconds. How does this affect

> users who prefer to back up their Websites via FTP?

Generally as long as you don't bog down the server you're not going to have any issues. It does take quite a lot to bog down our servers as we run high end dual quad core servers with 12GB of ram and Raid10 4xSAS 15k RPM Drives. In two years we've only had to suspend a small handful of accounts for over-usage and in most cases that was after giving the site operator up to a week to resolve the issues before suspension.

> 3) If after a short month or two trial, I am satisfied and go for two-years and

> find my Website growing to the point that an account upgrade is needed, will I

> just need to pay the difference for the remaining term for the upgrade, or how

> will that work?

With upgrades and changed plans we pro-rate everything meaning any time not used will be credited towards the new plan and then the new plan price will be pro-rated for the remainder of your term. The point is that you won't pay for something you're not using and will only pay for the actual amount of time you're using any specific plan.

> 4) In all honesty, if you were searching for Web Hosting and HDD Hosting did not

> exist, which Web Host would you choose for a Hosting Account using 4GB of

> storage and an average of 30-50 GB of bandwidth per month?

I've personally used Hostgator in the past and for their size their service and support is sufficient. The only complaint I really had was that there would be fairly frequent 1~3 minute outages on the server I was on but that could have been specific to that one server and not reflective of their over-all service. Beyond that, if you were looking for hosting based in the UK I would vote for EZPZHosting.co.uk.

> Thank you very much for your time. I hope your response proves positive as HDD

> Hosting appears promising.

It's "MDD" and not "HDD" but I hope so - we do certainly look forward to being able to provide you with the solid and reliable hosting experience you're looking for.

If you have any further questions or concerns by all means let us know.

Do check your mail account and spam folders as the logs on our end show that your ISP's mail server did indeed receive the message and place it in your inbox :D

Thanks for the speedy replies. I get a notice if anything happens to land in the junkfolder, but I received no emails. I'm pretty sure I must have mistyped my email and it coincidentally turned out to me another persons email (I can't tell for sure as you kindly censored it, thank you for doing so). Sorry if I had mistyped it. And sorry for the mistype of MDD. I see I did that twice. My fingers must have been thinking Hard Drive Disc or something. :D I was also pretty excited about switching to MDD, so I wasn't paying enough attention to those details. All excuses aside, I'm definitely going to try you guys out.

Thanks again for the great service! I haven't even signed up and you've already wowed me.

Must have been some weird delay in my ISP and POP3 connection. I just received all the emails from Tuesday, plus the notification of the ticket being closed from today.

I will be signing up this evening, just had to ensure I had full domain control as I plan on transferring my domains to namecheap.com as well. All is looking good now. I'm excited! Thanks again for all your assistance! :D

Oh, and I'm becoming an affiliate and spreading the word to everyone I know who has a Website, or is looking for Web Hosting to start one.

I'm just about to sign up and I have one more Question (I'm signing up anyway, but still curious). In the ToS it mentions no muds/rpgs. I'm not sure exactly what an mud is, but does play-by-post fall into that category? Such as a forum thread where people play a board game using posts as they live too far away to play a real live board game?

We aren't running any play-by-posts, but some of our community members were wanting to do it, but it was against our previous host's ToS.

What you mention is fine :-) if you were running a "mud" you'd know it.
