Email question

Hello,

I've look over this forum & the knowledgebase & haven't seen this covered. However its very possible I missed the info. If I did overlook it Mea Culpa :)

1. Spam. Do you have any sort of filtering? Whitelists? Blacklists?

2. How would my users be notified of possible spam? Customers send data constantly (manufacturing facility). Its unreasonable to expect users to constantly be logging into a webmail account. Webmail is in fact impossible for the vast majority of users have internet disabled for their accounts on the server.

3. Is Imap the solution to #2? If so, how is it implemented?

Thanks a bunch!

Hello,
Hi!

1. Spam. Do you have any sort of filtering? Whitelists? Blacklists?
We filter incoming mail using SpamAssassin on all accounts which can either just tag the subject line with "***SPAM***" or can automatically delete spam messages. We do filter outgoing mail for a few things such as "buy viagra" and other such similar phrases that aren't likely to be found in a standard email message.

I don't quite understand your question - are you asking how would your users be notified if they were sending spam or how would they be notified if they were receiving spam? If you can clarify this question for me I will be more than happy to answer it.

3. Is Imap the solution to #2? If so, how is it implemented?
IMAP, POP3, and SMTP are all enabled on our services but how you use them is up to you. If you can be more clear about your question in number 2 it's likely I can be more accurate in this response as well.

Thanks a bunch!

Sounds good. We don't spam. But our email address on the site & on various manufacturing directories get tons of spam. Mainly angry demands in pigeon English that we partner with their offshore manufacturing facility. Quite funny actually. :)

I am not familiar with SpamAssasin. If I understand correctly, my users would still receive the spam in the inbox, but it would be marked ****SPAM**** in the subject line. Or would it go into a spam folder?

Currently the users get a daily spam report email. They can look it over for false positives. I retrieve the email & put the sender on the white list. This occurs maybe 1 or 2 x's a month. If they were sending spam, they wouldn't be a user anymore :)

With the exception of 1 or 2 users, none can access a webmail based spam box to check for spam. & I don't have time to check each & every box for spam every day.

I am also unsure about IMAP. If I understand it correctly, setting it up on a email client like Outlook will allow the user to download from the spam folder just like regular pop3?

If this is the case, then my worries about missing a potential customer email is moot.

Sorry if I was unclear. I'm just looking for the easiest solution to get my users their email, make it easy to retrieve false positives, & get the website on a real host. Currently it's with 1and1. I'd just make the server an exchange server, but I don't have the time to learn. It's all about marketing the website & getting customers.

Have a wonderful evening. & once again thank you!

Sure - it's usually faster via ticket but when I'm awake I watch the forums closely.

You can set it to go to a spam folder but it's only viewable via WebMail (Horde) so tends to not get cleared or be useful. I've not ever noticed SpamAssassin tagging mails as spam that aren't but I have seen it not tag a few that were spam and honestly that's better as I'd rather get an extra spam message than not get a legitimate one.

What you are describing sounds a lot like boxtrapper but I'm not sure what your current provider has configured for you.

I'm not aware that the spam folder is reachable via IMAP or POP3 but most of our users simply tag the emails and receive them in their inbox as well or automatically delete them.

Hello again,

Another round of questions that are probably obvious, but I'm a tad clueless about. Moving to a new host is new to me. Probably over thinking it & making it way more complicated. :)

I'd like to transfer my existing domain that I currently just use for email but would like to build a blog on it. I've built ton's for clients, it's time I did my own.

I was impressed by all the reviews & how fast the response was on the forum & on a Friday night night no less. :) So I decided to use my site as a ****** Pig before I transfer any client sites. (I swear that is not a curse word, but rather a reference to the small furry pet aka Cavy)

1. Since my domain is up for renewal at my current host in less than a week 3-25-2010, & I am too impatient to wait. When I transfer my domain here, will it still be renewed at my current host?

2. In order to transfer my domain name do I have to first unlock it? I ask this because when I selected this option, it showed my domain as available. That is impossible, it's up for renewal 3-25-2010 & there is a grace period for redemption after that.

3. If I have to "Point the name servers" rather than just use the "transfer domain name" option. How exactly do I do that without making a big mistake? I've looked at other hosts help articles (godaddy, host gator, blue host, etc) & am little bit more confused about how to do this as they all differ a little bit.

Once again thank you!!!!!!! & have a wonderful evening!!!!!!!

Hello again,
Hi.

You cannot transfer a domain within 60 days after registering it or renewing it so if you want to move it you would want to do so before it expires. Unfortunately with it expiring in less than a week I wouldn't suggest trying to transfer it as the transfer process can take up to 15 days to complete and relies heavily upon your old registrar to speed this up (many do intentionally wait until the last minute).

2. In order to transfer my domain name do I have to first unlock it? I ask this because when I selected this option, it showed my domain as available. That is impossible, it's up for renewal 3-25-2010 & there is a grace period for redemption after that.
I don't know what "it" is that you are referring to be it our system, their system, the domain registrar, whois or what? To transfer a domain it needs to be unlocked, you need the EPP or Auth code, and the administrator email address on the domain needs to be able to receive the request and authorize the transfer.

It varies from registrar to registrar but you simply go to the "nameservers" setting in the control panel and fill in the information that would be in your welcome email. Private nameservers are a bit more in-depth and if you're at a major registrar such as GoDaddy or NameCheap we can walk you through it but if you're at another host (similar to us, for example) you would have to have them set it up for you - hopefully they provide quality support.
