Major Outage - 09/21/18+ - Client Discussion

You have a couple of options:

1. You can sign into the account on S1 and put up a different/temporary page until your account is restored on S2.

2. I can terminate the account on S1, and you can just wait on the restoration on S2.

Of cource the (2) option. What else ? Remove me from S1. I will wait the normal restore at S2.

Where did you find a 3 years old backup .....

^^Moving forward, I think it will be wise to devise some sort of plan so when failure occurs it's a simple process to come back online --- as an end user, reseller, etc.

I know I will be putting in efforts to have fall back plan of some sort instead of scrambling to figure out what to do.

Learned my lesson last time not to have registrar/host be the same entity.

Perhaps we can start a thread for discussion of backup plans/strategies...

As they said in the motorcycling world...... It's not a question of if you'll crash but when.

Out loud, I was thinking of mirroring my more static sites on a second shared provider somewhere and simply pointing CloudFlare DNS at the mirrored copy of a site on the other shared account. A variation of this is having a predesigned "we'll be back soon" single pager on another host ready to have CloudFlare DNS pointed to. That being said, from what I know about MDD, I'd eat my hat if Mike allows downtime like this to ever happen again. I have lots of half decent shared accounts from other providers that I mess about with. In hindsight, I think I'd have went with option 2 for this situation and made my own little "we'll be back, here's our contact details" page.

As far as email, I've always been partial to having email in places like Google Suite / Zoho Mail. I know that cPanel has mail packages, I just like Google Suite better. Plus, with my domains at Namecheap, my DNS at CloudFlare and my email at Google Suite, I am still getting email through all this.

FYI. I'm just over 6 years with MDD. I'm in the "frustrated with the wait, but never jumping ship" club.

*Edit* Spelling derps.

S3.

As we haven't gotten the backups for that server copied over from Slow Backup to Fast Backup - access to JetBackup won't work.

While we'd like to give you access to Slow Backup to conduct restorations - even one restoration running during our data copies drops the data copy down from 200~500 megabytes/second down to 3~5 megabytes/second.

In short - while we'd like to give you direct access now - and we'd love to be conducting parallel restores from the old backup server - doing so would push restoration time back for everybody by days if not weeks. We just can't - although we wish we could.

I submitted a ticket to put up a temporary "site down" file with specific information for my customers, and it was put up (at laurashoe.com). However, is having a blank site out with just one html file going to destroy my Google rankings? If so, is this worse than the site not being there at all - even if I go back to the site being down, am I facing a disaster here?

The thought of this is making me very queasy.

The other issue is that the message is only generating for the home page - all other pages generate 404 errors (of course, now that I think about it). If the answer above is "no worries", then how do I get it to generate for all possible pages? I can edit the .htaccess file, but beyond this I'm not that knowledgeable about all this - I would need explicit instructions.

I don't know, maybe somebody else will.

Prolonged downtime made Google deindex my entire site.

Unbelievable.

Can't happen. Sorry, it just can't.

Do either of you have a backup of your own? If so - we'll be happy to restore them for you now and get you back online.

If you don't, unfortunately, you'll have to wait on our terribly slow backup server just like us.

We've already made changes that, even if an admin were to make such a major error in the future, we can recover the whole network in minutes, not hours or days - but we can't go back into the past and prevent it unfortunately.

I was only commenting on "google de-index" post, nothing else.

And i said Google doesn't de-index anything so fast. Mine are all indexed all right.

How will the damages incurred be compensated ?

I am running a webshop generating quite a bit of revenue and 4 - 5 days without any sales will cost me at least US$ 5000 (direct damages).

Read the terms of service: https://www.mddhosting.com/tos.php

I don't think there's a web host on the planet that will compensate people for lost income due to downtime. They couldn't - a single 6-hour outage would effectively put them out of business. Does the electric company compensate businesses for lost revenue when the power is out for a couple of days?

Last but not least, if your site is generating that much income, do you think using a bargain shared hosting service is a smart business decision? Or should you perhaps be paying more for hosting that has more redundancy, and quicker disaster recovery? Or should you perhaps maintain two hosting services, with the ability to change your nameservers in a heartbeat, and have all of your business directed to the secondary service in case of unfortunate problems like this one?

I'm running a SEO agency for over 10 years, so I may share some details on this: It's pure luck how fast Google de-indexes a site if it's offline since it depends on when the site was last crawled and how fast Google processes the data to the live index. Can happen in a few hours, can take weeks till Google recognizes the site is gone. De-indexing is no penalty (although some penalties can cause de-indexing, but that's a diffent topic and doesn't matter here), Google simply doesn't want to show people an error page since that's a bad user experience.

The good news: Once the site is back online, it will return to/in the old positions. How fast depends on the same factors as de-indexing, the more popular the site, the better it's linked from external sites, the more often it gets crawled, the faster it will re-appear in the SERPs. Worst case downtime and a new IP may trigger a re-evaluation with a ranking rollercoaster ride for a few weeks till it settles in the old positions. Best case, the site instantly ranks like before. So, there is no permanent damage due to the downtime, but you may experience some ranking anomalies for a short period of time. Impossible to predict, but at least you can be sure there won't be any negative longer term effects.

I hope someone here can help, as Support is probably a little too busy.

My site (ooakforum.com) is on P1, but it's still not working after almost 12h.

I'm using cloudflare.

My domain is externally hosted, so there should be no DNS delays/
They point to name servers:
YOLANDA.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM
MERLIN.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM

I do have a dedicated IP, but I'm not sure if I need it for this.

I've purged the cloudflare cache, and my browser caches, it's still not working.

Is there something else I need to do?

Can anyone help?

I have backups done through Wordpress, of files and database, but I don't have a full cPanel backup.

You could restore those files and databases to get your site back online - but that's all you'd have back is the site itself.

Anybody offline due to this that is losing money - I urge them to reach out to us and provide us with their own backups so we can get them back online now without having to wait on our backup system which is far slower than it should be. We already have corrected the issue for backups moving forward but can't retroactively fix the old ones.

Good news! Your PHPBB forum comes up fine for me. It shows 7 registered users and 79 guests currently online from the past 20 minutes. Maybe a browser cache?

The newest post seems to be from 9/12/2018, however. But I'm not signed in, either, to see private content.
