MjrNuT
Hi, Forgive this first thread in order to understand how the Subject as it relates to cPanel here. It is along the same lines of this topic, but I didn't want to jack it. Current site: www.mysite.comDirectory: /public_htmlFTP acct: ftp.mysite.com Add-on: www.addon.comDirectory: /public_html/addon.comFTP acct: ftpaddon.mysite.com Subdomain: subdomain.addon.comDirectory: /public_html/subdomain.addon.comFTP acct: ftpsubdomain.mysite.com I hope the above break down makes sense to you as it is my interpretation of the features for cPanel. This leads to my question here in a second. Note that the FTP accounts all are via mysite.com, rather than with respect to addon.com or subdomain.addon.com. Which means from this standpoint there is no separation (i.e., knowledge from mysite.com). From access via URL...they are ok (addon.com and subdomain.addon.com) as they don't contain mysite.com. Please confirm or correct my understanding. My goal is to have addon.com and subdomain.addon.com completely separate. I understand the folder structure in /public_html/ to be acceptable, but not for the FTP access. This leads me to think that a new account is required for my goal of the distinct domains I've used as examples. Given that, can someone describe to me a beneficial reason for utilizing cPanel in the manner I've described where its not an issue to have the FTP account be tied to mysite.com. Sorry for the long one, but I appreciate any input to help this budding net user.
Michael D.
Note that the FTP accounts all are via mysite.com, rather than with respect to addon.com or subdomain.addon.com. Which means from this standpoint there is no separation (i.e., knowledge from mysite.com). From access via URL...they are ok (addon.com and subdomain.addon.com) as they don't contain mysite.com.The @yoursite.com is how cPanel associates the add-on domain's FTP account with your primary account. If you are using the add on domains for yourself this is not an issue however if you are wanting to resell your account/give addon domains away 1) this is a violation of our terms of service and 2) we have reseller plans that make this available. Best bet would be to create them and log in and see what you can do. Although they both have @yoursite.com in the login they will be separated into their own areas on the server. Given that, can someone describe to me a beneficial reason for utilizing cPanel in the manner I've described where its not an issue to have the FTP account be tied to mysite.com.It's just like if I created an FTP account for one of my sites but made the login michael@someothersite.com - it's not going to cause me to be able to access the "someothersite" just because it's listed in the login. Sorry for the long one, but I appreciate any input to help this budding net user.I hope I answered your questions however the best way to find out if it does what you need is to create it and test it out
MjrNuT
Hey Mike, As always, thanks for the reply. The additional sites I've mentioned are my own, just completely different content. No intention for reselling of any kind. The clarification is understood and appreciated. I did go ahead and try the addon and subdomain and looked how everything played out. I actually scoured WHT forums a bit to confirm my understanding of all this. It was very enlightening!! I realize the FTP issue I described does not "permit" access to the other folder/files. The issue for me is like -- cross posting completely different genres of music (i.e., ballroom and rap). Someone expecting to access something purely ballroom sees rap signage. It's not a deal breaker. I'm just glad I understand I know how it works and what it means. That's what matters. Thanks Mike! Hope this helps others too. Michael D.
Yeah, I personally don't like how cPanel handles addon/subdomains and FTP logins but overall cPanel is one of the better if not the best Web Hosting Control Panels out there You have to take the bad with the good I suppose No system is perfect although I certainly hope the cPanel crew are trying!
