Easy question: what *is* the domain name in the default email address?

I see in the cpanel documentation that the default email account is described as "account@example.com" where "account" is the username I use to sign on to cpanel. Makes sense. In the description, what is "example"? (And for that matter, if I were hosting a .biz TLD at MDD, would it still be "example.com"?) As I said, likely an easily answered (and low priority) question.
