All Servers - Emergency Maintenance Reboots to close Operating System Security Hole

Recommended Posts

We are going to be performing system reboots this evening at 12am EST to ensure that patches that were installed last night are applied to all system processes. We estimate 15 minutes of downtime unless the server performs file system checks. If the server needs to do boot time file system checks it may take up to 2 hours for the server to come back online.

For the time of the maintenance in your area please see here: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=All+Servers+-+Emergency+Maintenance+Reboots+to+close+Operating+System+Security+Hole++&iso=20150128T22&p1=75&am=15

Hello,

I apologize for not responding. The maintenance was completed without any issues. Also, we do use kernel patching and regularly update without reboots. However the software affected was not in the kernel, so the kernel patching does not apply.

Why don't you just get Ksplice and avoid having to reboot in the first place?

We use KSplice on the couple of systems that are still on CloudLinux 5.X and KernelCare on everything else.

We have several servers that were online for 600+ days without interruption when they were rebooted so I don't feel that doing a reboot periodically [once or twice a year] is anything to be overly concerned about.
