Mine is a Wordpress site. Appropriate Wordpress info lies in my root .htaccess. Also in my root .htaccess I have placed definitions for error files: 400, 401, 403, 404, and 500. For each of these I have composed appropriate .htm pages.

Before this was a Wordpress site, all was well. When I installed Wordpress, I found that "generic" error pages were presented instead of the ones defined in my .htaccess. (Except for 404, which, understandably, yields a Search on my blog.)

Do I need to set up another tiny .htaccess in a Wordpress subfolder to redirect to my existing error pages?

WordPress may be clearing those settings. You can try editing the .htaccess in the WordPress folder or opening a ticket.
