Upgrading to PHP 5.4 and MySQL 5.5 across all servers.

Recommended Posts

Update:

You can now, as of this very moment, select which version of PHP you are running, what PHP modules that version has, and even specify the common PHP settings all right from your cPanel via the "Select PHP Version" icon! The versions currently available are 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, and 5.5.

We sent you an email a few hours ago giving you notice about a maintenance window on October 8th for PHP upgrades. This maintenance has been canceled due to this new module.

Do understand that changing this setting can cause issues for your sites - if you do change this setting make sure that your site works properly. Your account will use the default PHP settings until you customize them via the "Select PHP Version" icon in your control panel.

Thank you

Original:

We will be upgrading all servers to run PHP 5.4 and MySQL 5.5 within the next 60 days. When we have a more specific date/time scheduled we will update this post with further details.

I suggest making sure your software is compatible with PHP 5.4. If you're running something off-the-shelf like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, etc and it's kept up-to-date you should have no problems. If you're running a custom coded script - there's a good chance modifications will need to be made to make it compatible.

I know this is a stupid question, but I recall some time ago (and probably on a previous host) there was an option in cpanel to use an earlier php version if the new one gave us issues. Is that going to be an option by any chance?

Just trying to plan ahead ;)

It's something we are researching, however we're not yet decided. We do have some concerns that need to be addressed before we would make it available.

This would be good as I've just noticed my Zenphoto album runs on PHP version: 5.3.22

If not I take it I will have to find another software for my photos and I've only just got used to this one. :o

Is the software specifically not compatible with PHP 5.4? I can't imagine the script isn't either already compatible, or will be updated so that it works under PHP 5.4.

Hello Scott, I don't know I've only recently started using it and noticed in the Admin side it says PHP version: 5.3.22 & MySQLi version: 5.5.32

I would check with the scripts developer or their docs to see the minimum requirements and if there are known issues with PHP 5.4. In many cases, PHP 5.3.x vs PHP 5.4.x won't matter if the script is kept up to date and the author is competent. The versions shown in the admin/control panel may also represent the current version of PHP and MySQL it is running under, and not a requirement for the script.

We're scheduling this for Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 12:30 AM ET - the upgrade process should only take 30 to 60 minutes and should be seamless [we expect no downtime]. We will send out an email notice 1 week before the upgrade is to be performed.

We will be performing the update a server at a time in case there are unforeseen side effects or issues to be handled.
