Has the 200 an hour always been in place? I just sent a mass mail to my forum members about reducing the amount of people getting the monthly newsletter and had 12 messages discarded.

Now I know it's 200 max I can work on reducing it somehow for the newsletter, but knowing ahead of time would have been handy. :(

I think the 200 hourly max has been in place and in the mailing policy since about the second half of 2008, so the policy has been there a while. Before that it was 500.

The old policy used to have a couple lines "Anytime you're sending a message no matter how large your e-mail list is you must throttle it. We recommend you throttle it to no faster than sending 1 email every 6 seconds." and "If the mailing list software you're using does not allow you to throttle you must switch to something else." but I see that's gone now.

It has been 200 for years.

The mailing policy is included reading along with the Terms of Service - http://www.mddhosting.com/tos.php#17 and the limit of 200 is not new.

Indeed, so long as you stay under the overall limits you're fine - anybody realistically needing more than 200/hour or 30,000/month should look at something like Mandrill -> http://mandrill.com/pricing/

It's free for up to 12,000/month and $3.60/month to send to 30,000. Sending to 100,000 is only $17.60/month.

Really, to get an SMTP service from a service whose whole goal in life is delivery to an inbox [like Mandrill] that's operated by a bulk mailing company with years of experience at this price is exceptionally cheap.

Thanks for the answers, I queried the 200 because I had never had a problem before and thought it could have been due to the new policy. But I have just worked out I had never had more than 200 go out at a time for the newsletter so wouldn't have had the problem in the past, but now I have more members obviously more are going out. So apologies for that.

I'm now making changes to get members to subscribe to the monthly newsletter instead of sending out to all by default, so that should knock it down.

Regarding sending emails 1 every 6 seconds, does anyone know how I could do that with MyBB ?

Thank You.

Sorted it thanks, if anyone else wants to know. Go to "Tools & Maintenance" > "Task Manager" > "Mass Mail" > "Options" > "Edit Task" > Change "Time: Minutes" to 15,35,55 scroll down "Save Task"

Emails will now only go out three times per hour, and if you leave Per Page at 50 when creating a mass mail you will only send 150 per hour. this will leave you an extra 50 per hour for other mails like subscriptions, notifications, etc. :)
